Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS)
|
Picture Exchange Communication Systems (PECS) were developed in 1985 as an alternative/augmentative communication intervention system for nonverbal individuals by Dr. Andrew Bondy and Lori Frost, CCC-SLP. PECS is often used by children diagnosed with autism and other developmental disabilities. PECS is focused on teaching initiation of communication- a skill that is often difficult to teach children diagnosed with developmental disabilities. It is also requires children to engage in requesting from a communicative partner that swaps the card for what the child requested. PECS is comprised of 6 different stages:
There are several pre-made PECS sets, available for the classroom, home, or community setting. Pictures for a PECS system can also be made to customize the pictures for the child, the family, or the situation. |
